For Sherry, the bond with her mother Sally has always been strong. But like many families, there came a time when their roles began to shift.
“It wasn’t one big moment,” Sherry shares. “It was a lot of little things adding up.” Small changes like missed medications, growing forgetfulness, and increasing concern led Sherry to step into a caregiving role. Like many daughters, she did everything she could to support her mom while balancing her own life.
“You go from being the daughter to becoming the caregiver,” she says. “And that’s a very emotional place to be.” But with that shift came a realization: love sometimes means recognizing when you can’t do it all alone.

Recognizing the Signs
For many families, the decision to explore assisted living doesn’t come until there’s a crisis, but it doesn’t have to be that way.
“It got to the point where I was constantly worrying,” Sherry explains. “I didn’t want her just getting by. I wanted her to truly live.”
A New Chapter for Them Both
Since moving into assisted living, Sally’s world has opened up in ways Sherry had hoped for.
Now, her days are filled with activity, connection, and purpose. From chair yoga to outings and social events, she has built friendships and embraced a vibrant routine. She even walked the runway alongside her daughter during a recent community fashion show, a moment neither of them will forget.
“She’s thriving,” Sherry says. “She’s happy, she’s engaged, and she’s still completely herself.”
Having her beloved cat by her side made the transition even more meaningful, helping her feel truly at home.

From Caregiver Back to Daughter
Today, the biggest change isn’t just in Sally, it’s in their relationship. “I get to be her daughter again,” Sherry shares. “We can just enjoy our time together without all the stress and worry.” What once felt like a difficult decision has become one rooted in love, peace of mind, and a better quality of life for them both.
A Message for Other Families
This Mother’s Day, Sherry reflects on what she has learned through the journey. “Choosing this wasn’t easy,” she says. “But it was one of the most loving decisions I could make.”
Her advice to others: “Don’t wait until something happens. Pay attention to the signs and know that sometimes, the best way to care for someone you love is to give them the opportunity to truly live again.”
